Raising a kind child and a happy dog

Our dog was here first, and when our toddler arrived, watching him figure out this new version of family life was one of the more quietly emotional parts of early parenthood. The movement became less predictable, the snacks infinitely more interesting, and the calm corners he’d claimed as his own suddenly had small hands in them.

We’ve learned a lot by watching what actually helps — for him and for us.

Give your dog somewhere that’s genuinely theirs

This was the first thing we got right. A bed behind a baby gate, a crate with the door propped open, a corner of the bedroom — somewhere a toddler physically can’t follow. Not as a punishment, just as a real option to step away. Once our dog knew that space was reliable, he used it. And that made everything else easier.

Make a fuss of the quiet moments

It’s easy to only notice the moments that need managing. But the small good stuff is worth marking too — your dog choosing to settle on their bed while the toddler plays nearby, moving away calmly instead of reacting, watching from a comfortable distance. A quiet “good boy” or a small treat for those moments adds up. You’re basically making gentleness the more rewarding option.

Come home gently

We walk in with bags, a pram, shoes to remove, and a toddler who’s often at peak energy after an outing. Our dog needs a calm hello before all of that hits full volume. It takes about ten seconds and it sets the right tone for everyone.

Actually watch them, not just be in the room

This one took us a while. Being present isn’t the same as supervising. Active supervision means actually reading what’s happening — are ears back, is there stiffness, is the dog moving away? Catching the early signs and creating space before anyone reaches their limit is so much easier than managing the aftermath.
